James Walker is an urban historian who studies how communities across the American West have handled heat, water, and growth.

He leads the cooler streets project, which brings historians, engineers and planners together to test shade, trees and water on three streets in the city.

As dean, he has kept the college’s doctoral program small, with no more than six new candidates a year and two faculty mentors for each.
